I am truly lucky when it comes to family and the environment where we grew up in! The best memories from my childhood all relate to the Summers spent in our summer house in the Turku Archipelago.

For some of us memory develops at an unusually early age and I remember things from such a young age that even my mum has difficulties in believing that my memory would reach so far back. Some things just stick to my mind very firmly, I don’t know why.

So, when I saw this task on the 30-day photography challenge list the first thing that popped into my mind was this one time we did a road-trip around the “circle road” that snakes its way through the archipelago from island to island. I’m not sure if my brother had been born at that point yet but I think there was a pram… so I guess I was around 3-4 years old.

I can’t remember which island we were on at that point, but I remember there was a farm with sheep. We bought ice cream and I even remember that it was my favourite flavour: chocolate and mint.

And I clearly remember that I droppedĀ the scoop of ice cream from the cone and onto the ground. I was devastated! I guess I went into some sort of a shock because I can’t remember if I got a new scoop or not :D

Another thing that I have extremely fond memories of was my mum’s aunt who lived in a house few hundred meters from our summer house. The mushroom soup she cooked is still vivid in my memory. To this day I haven’t found a better mushroom soup and I’ve been to a lot of 5* restaurants.

She would always smoke in the kitchen and shake the ashes into the wood-burning stove and we would jump around her sniffing the smoke. We weren’t quite aware of the harms of smoking at such an early age.

One of the clearest, and the most hilarious, memories that I have from the summer house is when my brother got stung by a bee. It was Spring and we had come to put the summer house back into livable condition for the summer. Me and my brother ventured to the neighboring summer house and went to inspect the play house there.

I turned my back for a second and within that time my brother had lifted a bowl underneath which there was a bee hive. All I know is I suddenly heard extremely loud screaming behind me. I didn’t know what was going on because I couldn’t see any harm on him at that point but the noise was too loud and too unexpected. So I just ran out screaming my head off and left my brother there :D

I turned the corner and saw our parents running in their socks with a look on their faces like a bear was hunting them. They thought the screaming was due to a snake having bitten us but thankfully it was just a bee. But my brother’s thumb did swell to an incredible size. Thinking about it now, the whole scene makes me laugh so much.

What’s your best childhood memory?
