How does a piece of clothing or a pattern become a classic? What does it need to embody or signal to deserve such an iconic word?
- Classic clothes are simple, everyday pieces with neutral colour palette.
- Classics are the sort of clothes that will go with any outfit combo any given day.
- Classic clothes are those that never go out of fashion due to their versatility.
So, how does the bright and wild leopard print fall into this category? I think it might be because all the other stable classics (the white T-shirt, a well-sitting jacket, and a pair of basic jeans) are so tame in colour palette and simple in shape that one wild print fits in the mix perfectly.
I mean, mixing jeans with leopard print loafers or a top can never go wrong! Perhaps avoid wearing 2 pieces with leopard print at the same time (unless the second piece is underpants) because that can be a bit too much jungle on you.
Judging by the amount of people loving leopard print right now I think it’s quite clear that this trend is never going away. This season it happens to be one of the trendiest things to drape yourself with, and everybody is embracing it whole-heartedly. Who can blame them!
This absolutely wonderful leopard print top by Guess was actually given to me by a friend who had come to regret buying it. This is the best way to recycle clothes, I think, because instead of throwing this lovely top away, it gets worn quite a lot by me.
Since it’s a classic piece, it stretches into quite a few outfits. Here’s how I would dress this leopard print top; one casual look and one for a night out.
Casual Day Look
OK, let’s not kid anyone, this is not an office-appropriate look :D Perhaps it could be if we discarded the knot and let the top flow down to it’s normal length. But it is still see-through so it’s a bit on the edge of whether it’s appropriate to the office or not.
When you want to go for a casual look, the first thing to opt for are, obviously, a pair of jeans. They come in a million different shapes and sizes, and since leopard print goes with any shade of denim, your options are never-ending.
Depending on the jeans/skirt/shorts I choose the shoes accordingly. These black heels from Aldo are my absolute favourites and super comfortable, even if they don’t look like it. They’re definitely sassy enough to go together with leopard print. But a pair of sneakers could work just as well.
Jeans and leopard print work forever and always so this is probably the ultimate savor combo for those days when you feel like there’s nothing to wear. Add some gold stud earrings and a simple bracelet and you’re ready to roll.
Night Out Look
top Guess | skirt Vila | ankle boots Zara
It’s always a bit risky to pair a flowy, loose piece of clothing with another over-sized piece of clothing: one can easily end up looking 5 kilos heavier. But with the right pieces of clothing such combos work!
I’ve steered away from such style all my life but recently I’ve started to warm up to it. And with this particular combo, I think I’m finally starting to grasp the idea of just how great matching loose with loose can look. This might just as well become my new favourite outfit for this season.
Pairing leopard print with black is always safe; black tones it down a little bit and is simply chic af. This skirt screams summer with it’s wavy hem and the mini skirt underneath, but when paired with the right accessories, it gets transformed to an Autumn-appropriate item.
The main effect here comes from the heels; opt for ankle boots with a slim heel. I like robust ankle boots so the platform on these shoes makes them look a tad more rock’n’roll. For evenings out I like to wear statement jewelry that will not go unnoticed, and here I’d go for big earrings and leave the necklace off.
Pop a leather jacket on that and you’re ready to dazzle the streets.
Are you crazy about the leopard trend? What’s your favourite way to wear it?
