The Editory Riverside Hotel in Lisbon is located in the same beautiful building as the Santa Apolonia train station that was opened already in 1865. But don’t let the old age fool you, the newly furbished Editory Riverside Hotel was actually opened in March 2022.

The Editory Riverside Hotel Lisbon – Full Review
I added a 5-day staycation in Lisbon in between my Porto excursions, and what a brilliant idea that was! Porto is much further North, and thus much cooler and rainier.
While Lisbon was basking in 25 degrees and full sunshine, Porto stayed in the region of 19-21 degrees Celsius. I prefer it hot!

But it wasn’t just the heatwave that brought me to Lisbon. I have been there once before but didn’t see much of the city.
Plus I had friends to meet there! And since these days I am able to travel in style, I decided to splurge when choosing a hotel. Let’s see how my choice turned out in the end: Here’s my Editory Riverside Hotel review:
The hotel’s story
I had a bit of a bumpy train ride from Porto, but as I arrived in Lisbon I realized that my hotel was in the same building as the train’s final stop!
Oh yes, the Editory Riverside Hotel in Lisbon is located in one of the oldest train stations in Portugal. And what a beautiful train station it is!
The bright red, clean and simple facade hides behind i:
- gorgeous marble staircases, beautiful mementos from the years of serving as a train station, and a lot of vintage vibes
- rustic leather armchairs, old suitcases and phones
- a reception desk that looks like it was used already a century ago.
Every detail in this hotel has been carefully thought out, and it shows. I was very impressed by the beauty of it, and I’ve seen a LOT of hotels.
I’m sure the train station itself holds plenty of stories of people arriving and leaving. But the Editory Riverside Hotel has only just been opened, so its own story is still developing.

The location 5/5
As one of the oldest trains stations in the country, the Santa Apolonia building, where the Editory Riverside Hotel is located, exists in the old part of Lisbon. This area is known as Alfama, which climbs from the river Tagus way up to Castelo de S. Jorge.
And when I say ‘climb’, I mean it literally. Porto had hills, but they are nothing compared to the extremely steep ascends and descends of Lisbon. I’m a runner, but I almost couldn’t cope.
Nonetheless, even though it can be a struggle, climbing up the narrow, beautiful streets of Alfama is totally worth the bother.
- Just a short climb from the Editory Riverside Hotel you find yourself in front of the Panteão Nacional, also known as the Church of Santa Engrácia.
- Walk along the river towards the city center, and within 10 minutes you find yourself on the big square with the Arco da Rua Augusta.
- A short way from there you will find the Pink Street, a popular place for eating during the day, and parties in the night.
- Go up the hills towards the São Bento area, and you will find even more amazing restaurants, bars and a looot of merry people.
Beware, though, if you want to avoid touristy areas, stay away from São Bento. Other than these, everything in Lisbon is close with the Bolt taxi app: fast, cheap and very efficient.

The services 4/5
While staying in the hotel, I like to use the services. I mean, if somebody’s willing to do my laundry and cook for me, I’m more than willing to accept!
The Editory Riverside Hotel offers a full breakfast, but it is not included in the room price. The same restaurant transforms into a fine-dining restaurant in the evening.
I don’t usually eat breakfast, so I asked the reception if it would be okay for me to just get a cup of coffee in the morning. They notified the restaurant, and I waddled over every morning to receive my ever-important cup of morning coffee.
While picking up my coffee I did catch a glimpse of the breakfast, and it looked splendid! I did have dinner there one evening, and the local specialty, seafood rice, was absolutely delicious.
The hotel also had a laundry service, and having been traveling solo for a week already, I needed it. There was a bit of confusion about how the laundry department would get the message about my laundry bag waiting, though.
It was clear that the cleaners and the laundry department did not communicate with each other. But it’s early days for the hotel, and I told them about this, so let’s hope they’ve fixed it since. With the laundry service itself I was very pleased.
The room 5/5
The room itself included all the things any hotel should have. Towels, the basic beauty kit, sowing kit, soaps, shampoos, conditioners and body lotion.
The room was cleaned every day and the interior was perfect for someone who has to work while traveling. I tried working in a café, but the Wifi wasn’t up to my standards. Thankfully the hotel provided me with a great desk and a chair to build my work station on.
Editory Riverside Hotel Lisbon Review – My Opinion
If you have a quick browse around the internet, the Editory Riverside Hotel in Lisbon is rated as a 4,5 – 5 star hotel. And I can confirm, it IS a 5-star hotel!
It’s an experience that combines elegance, history, architecture, comfort and convenience seasoned with amazing service.
As I stayed in the hotel just after it had been opened, there were some minor details in terms of the daily running of things that hadn’t yet quite settled, shall we say.
But depending on how long after 2022 you’re reading this, all of those little mishaps have probably been fixed. (Because I of course did point them out as constructive feedback when I was checking out.)
To keep things nice and simple, here are the main pros and cons that I encountered during my stay at this beautiful hotel:
Pros
- Stylish, elegant and intriguing architecture and interior design
- Location is 10/10!
- Clean, practical room that had everything that’s needed for remote work
- Excellent staff and customer service on all levels
- Price/quality ratio was (in my opinion) reasonable
- Covers all basic services: laundry, restaurant, gym, parking, etc.
Cons
- Breakfast is not included in the price of the room
- There was no pool (this is just me being a whiny bitch, I’m fully aware that the building isn’t suited to fit a pool…)
- I had to ask for a new water bottle every day (this may have been fixed since)
- The laundry and cleaning departments didn’t communicate, which meant that my laundry wasn’t picked up as supposed (also this has probably been fixed since my visit).
