How To Recognize a High Quality Leather Bag in 2026?

If you’ve been wondering how to recognize a high quality leather bag, you’ve come to the right place! And I’m talking legit high quality bags. I myself learned the tricks of the trade the hard way:

I invested thousands on a luxury brand bag that turned out to be anything but luxury. The leather wasn’t proper leather, which meant that the bag deteriorated in just 3 years to a point where I couldn’t wear it anymore without being embarrassed. Learn from my mistakes and stay away from these formerly known “luxury brands”!

Here’s the good news, though: while these luxury brands descend into fast fashion brands with extortionate price tags, the market still offers plenty of beautiful high quality brands. And these brands don’t empty your savings account for nothing in return. Quite the contrary!

So, how to invest in a leather bag that will bring you joy for decades to come? Allow me to divulge.

How to Recognize a High Quality Leather Bag?

If even luxury brands will scam you by lying about their bags being proper leather, how can you trust any leather bag vendor? Well, unfortunately finding the perfect leather bag does require a little bit of effort from us consumers. But I guarantee, it’s worth it!

The trick is to not trust what you are told but to double-check these basic features yourself before making a purchase decision. Before I get to the tips, I want to tell you one industry secret told to me by an actual leather designer:

These popular baguette bags are in fact not worth the high prices they are often sold for. This is simply because making them doesn’t take any time or skill and as such doesn’t cost much (only 4 stitches, rarely piping).

Also, they are most often made out of low quality leather simply because brands can rely on them being trendy and as such desirable. Don’t waste your money on them!

Now, to the actual business, how to recognize a high quality leather bag:

1. Inspect the leather

The first thing to ask the vendor is how the bag was dyed or coated. This means the colouring process because the initial animal hide that is turned into workable leather is usually not the wanted colour. Especially if it has been chemically tanned: the leather always turns dirty white. Not something that many people would pay for.

So, the two options are vegetable-tanned leather or chemically-tanned leather. You should always prefer vegetable-tanned leather above all! Not just because it’s a much more environmentally friendly method but also because it ensures a durable bag that you can happily wear for decades.

Vegetable-tanning allows the graceful ageing that vintage bags are known for. Whereas chemical tanning “kills” the leather and thus makes the bag wear out. It’s much cheaper, though, which is why most known brands prefer it nowadays. Again, don’t waste your money!

After that you can pay attention to the following details to determine the bag’s quality:

  1. is the leather full-grain? The natural surface is often the strongest option and capable of developing a beautiful patina
  2. is the leather top-grain? The surface has been lightly sanded or corrected, which doesn’t hurt the quality but full-grain is more durable.

Extra tip: If you see a leather product with a tag “Genuine leather”, accept that it doesn’t actually mean anything. Anyone can slab a tag on any products without any requirement to make sure it’s true. Even if the product is genuine leather, the tag doesn’t tell you anything of its actual quality.

2. Inspect the stress points

The next step in recognising a high quality leather bag is to inspect the parts that are exposed to most wear. Parts like

  • handles,
  • straps and their attachments,
  • corners and the base of the bag
  • and the closing mechanism.

Just like with clothing there should be no loose threads anywhere along the stitching. In addition, the parts where handles and straps meet the body of the bag should have reinforced stitching.

Hollow or flimsy handles are an immediate red flag, and corners should be carefully finished, preferably protected by layering. The stitching around strap attachments should also be substantial to be able to handle wear and weight.

Extra tip: If the bag has panels or stitching patterns, check that they are straight and that the seams meet impeccably. For example, Chanel‘s most popular bag model, the Classic Flap bag, has this distinctive diamond stitching. If the stitching doesn’t go around the bag in perfect symmetry, you are holding a fake version of the bag.

3. Test the hardware

Next up: the hardware. This includes zippers, clasps, buckles, etc. and they are easy to test. Zip the zipper, check that the clasps work as they should and make sure that buckles don’t buckle.

Good quality hardware can be recognised from following features:

  • Moves smoothly without catching
  • Feels appropriately substantial in relation to the size of the bag
  • Sits straight and securely
  • Has a clean, even finish
  • Doesn’t show rough casting marks, sharp edges, or obvious looseness

We all know what a dysfunctioning zipper is like. If the zipper on your chosen bag feels flimsy and as if you’d need to be a bit careful to operate it, move away from the bag. Hardware doesn’t improve with use like high quality leather does.

That doesn’t mean, though, that hardware should always be brass. The materials can vary while sturdiness is the measure of quality.

4. Make sure the inside is pristine

The last bit of research to determine whether a bag is a high quality leather bag is to examine the inside of it. Of course check all extra pockets and that they are intact, no holes or excess glue in the seams and that the zippers work properly.

In addition, pay attention to the lining: is it flat, neat and securely attached? Loose or puckered lining doesn’t necessarily mean the leather isn’t high quality but if you’re going to spend some dough, every part of the bag should be pristine, right?

It doesn’t make sense that the exterior is well made but a brand has given up on perfecting the inside of the bag. That basically means that greed has infected the manufacturing process as money has clearly been saved where they thought they could. Don’t fall for it!

5. Assess the structure and intended use

Last but not least, when investing in anything pricey we should consider whether we actually need what we’re buying as well as how and when we will wear/use it.

  1. Is this bag for everyday use or mainly for special occasions? An everyday bag should be well structured from durable leather.
  2. Does the bag fill its function? For everyday bags easily accessible inside pockets and practical structure is recommended, whereas with special occasion bags more attention can be put on the appearance.
  3. Does the bag distribute weight sensibly? A big tote bag with narrow straps might not be the best combination; when it’s full of stuff the weight can wear out the straps and attachments faster than expected.

Final thoughts on how to recognize a high quality leather bag

I’m an absolute leather enthusiast so I take my accessories seriously. What I love the most about high quality leather is that I can enjoy those pieces throughout my life. And as I only buy things that I’m completely in love with and can’t live without, I want them to last a lifetime!

Good quality leather is durable of its own accord. But it is, of course, also recommended to take care of your leather products. So, when you start investing in leather products, get yourself a basic leather care kit. Remember that leather is basically like skin: it needs a moisturizer even if not every day.

I hope this guide helps you and that you enjoy your leather products as much and for as long as I do! ♥
