You’ve probably heard people say that in this digital age a simple website can make you rich. And then you see an ad after another of dozens of thousands of dollars people have made with their website in a month. So you buy their online course to find out how to do that yourself!
You take all the tips and do all the tricks but the results just won’t show… I think we can now establish how exactly that person got rich. And it wasn’t their website!
Don’t worry babe, I can guarantee we’ve all been there, done that. It’s an easy mistake to make, but as mistakes always do, they provide a pretty good opportunity to learn and develop.
So, I’m not here to rip you off. Instead, I’m here to provide my expertise on this matter for free. Because it is true, there are several ways to monetize a website. But for authenticity’s sake, I have to point out that none of the ways bring you any money overnight.
To build a successful website you need to know what you’re doing, you need a goal of some sort. And this article is here to help you out with just that. At the end of the day, the best method for you will depend on 4 key things:
- your website’s niche
- traffic
- your audience
- and the type of content you provide.
So, here are some common strategies and tips to get started.
Build a Website
In a minute I give you 8 examples of how your website can make you rich. All you need is to nail one or two of them. But remember, nailing just one of these does take time and dedication, so get in terms with that right now.
Before explaining the actual ways to start making money with a website, you need to build one. And for that you do have to put down some money for these 2 things:
- domain: this is the URL of your website, get creative with this one! TOP TIP: .com domains are the most expensive ones, so perhaps opt for something like .co.uk, .eu, .co, etc.
- hosting service: these are IT services that enable your website to run smoothly and take care of all the ‘backstage’ stuff like updates, solving issues and taking care of maintenance of your site.
There are thousands of hosting services to choose from, many specifically for certain niches. My first hosting service was GoDaddy, and I was relatively pleased with them. But then I switched to Lyrical Host and oh my goodness! Talk about customer satisfaction!
Lyrical Host has the fastest customer service I’ve ever encountered and they’ve helped me with a variety of issues from purging the cache on my site to solving a bizarre source of traffic on my Google Analytics.
And when my site is down, instead of panicking I head to Facebook and into the Lyrical Community there. They always announce immediately when there are larger issues and that they are working on it. You can then follow when the issue is solved from an update page that they share with everyone. So stress free!
8 Ways How a Website Can Make You Rich!
Before we dive head first into my 8 tips on how a website can make you rich, I’d like to share some tips first. These are my tips for building a successful website:
- Quality Content: This is the number one thing with any website. Your content must be valuable and engaging in order to attract and retain visitors.
- SEO: Search Engine Optimization refers to optimizing your website so that search engines can find it to direct more visitors to your site, thus increasing organic traffic (meaning the traffic will find you themselves, you can just sit back and relax)
- User Experience: Make sure your site is user-friendly with a clean and clear design and easy navigation. Always feature CTAs (Call for Action) where appropriate.
- Analytics: Using tools like Google Analytics is essential to keep track of how your website is performing, to understand your audience and to further optimize your content using the data.
Now, let’s get into it!
1. Advertising
Probably the best known tactic to monetize a website is through advertising. If this is something you could utilize to make sure your website can make your rich, there are three main ways to do this:
- Pay-Per-Click (PPC): Use programs like Google AdSense to display ads on your website. You get paid every time a visitor clicks on an ad.
- Banner Ads: Alternatively you can sell ad space on your site either directly or through ad networks.
- Sponsored Posts: Companies pay you to write articles about their products or services.
Now, everybody’s aware of what PPCs are, especially because we’ve all seen them. The question is did the ads affect your user experience on that site? Since one of the most important markers for a successful website is its user-friendliness, monetizing a website through adverts needs to be considered with care.
You definitely know what it’s like to visit a website that’s teeming with Google ads. The ads are often completely irrelevant to the actual content and there is such an abundance of them that you can barely find the actual content. Such websites don’t retain people for very long, which then obviously affects your ability to make money.
Banner ads are a more user-friendly option because you get to determine what and where on your site they are. The downside is that their click-through rate is only 0,46%.
2. Affiliate marketing
This is a familiar tactic for anyone who follows social media influencers. But in addition to sharing your affiliate links on social media, you can provide them a more permanent placement on your website.
Your website can make you rich through affiliate marketing in two ways:
- Product reviews and recommendations: Earn a commission by promoting products or services. When a visitor clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase, you earn a percentage of the sale.
- Affiliate networks: Join networks like Amazon Associates, ShareASale, or CJ Affiliate to find products and brands to promote.
Now, for transparency’s sake, most affiliate programs offer small commissions per sale. We can be talking as little as $0,10 per sale. So, in order to make proper money this way, you’d need to attract massive traffic that then also clicks and buys through your links.
While this may sound like an impossible feat, it doesn’t have to be! When you do things a bit differently, there is great potential in affiliate marketing. Instead of just sticking to your website and social media to share links, add a newsletter to the list:
When you get a juicy affiliate deal that you think could really benefit your community you could:
- post about topics that are relevant to the affiliate deal on your social media every day for 1 week (including the link, of course)
- write 2-3 blog posts about the product/service, add the aff link as a CTA and SEO the hell out of the post
- send 3-4 inspiring newsletters to your community including the affiliate link.
When using affiliate links it’s important to make people aware that you are using such links. Depending on the country, a disclaimer can even be compulsory.
3. Selling products or services
Then there’s the most obvious way a website can make you rich: selling products and services. Now, I’m not talking about listing products on Amazon etc., but more original sales. Stuff like:
- E-commerce: Sell physical or digital products directly from your own website.
- Dropshipping: Sell products without holding inventory. This you would do through a third-party supplier, like Amazon, that handles the inventory and shipping for you.
- Services: Offer professional services like consulting, web design, or writing.
Obviously, as an SEO Copywriter by profession, I do the latter option. But I’ve also known people who do dropshipping, and that can be a pretty profitable way to monetize a website. The only downside in that (for someone like me) is the amount of work it requires to set your dropshipping website up.
Basically you have to cover these eight steps before you can start making money:
- Research different niches to distinguish popular products to sell
- Select an eCommerce platform that suits your needs
- Establish a partnership with a dropshipping supplier
- Build your eCommerce store/website
- Create and optimize a seamless order fulfilment process with your supplier(s)
- Market your dropshipping business on social media and via newsletter
- Expand to other sales channels
- Keep optimizing your dropshipping business
4. Membership or subscription models
Different kinds of memberships and subscriptions are gaining popularity as social media platforms are ever more disappointing their users by destroying the user experience. People are willing to pay to see their favourite creators’ content rather than stick to the old ways.
Patreon is probably the best known subscription platform and Substack is another popular option. To be able to attract paying viewers for your content, and make sure your website can make you rich, you can either offer Premium content or Memberships.
Premium content means you would charge users for access to exclusive content, such as articles, videos, or courses. This is content for those select few who have a few cents to spare. Which creates scarcity, which can act as an effective bait for more paying followers.
Membership sites, on the other hand, are all about community. If you have a community that follows you for some specific reason you can monetise that interest by charging a recurring fee for access to your content or networking opportunities.
5. Accepting guest posts
Next on this ‘How a Website Can Make You Rich’ list we have guest posts. This is another service I offer here on Outlandish Blog. For those who know about SEO, it’s basically about offering link building opportunities.
It may sound weird at first that I charge money from somebody who wrote the article that I then just publish on my site. But in fact, it’s not weird at all considering how much work I put into this website.
What they pay for is visibility online, which is something that my website can offer them. In addition, they also get a free pass to my global audience through guest posts. In a way it’s similar to PPC, which we covered earlier, but much easier to make better money.
Most businesses want to pay as little for their guest posts as possible, but that’s where you as the website Admin have to stay firm. Know the amount of work you’ve put in to create a site that businesses want to be featured on! It’s not just a hobby for you, it’s a business blog.
An easy way to determine how much you can happily charge per a guest post is according to your Domain Authority:
How much to charge for a guest post
Domain Authority |
Traffic |
Fee |
10+ |
1 000 – 3 999 |
$30 – $60 |
20+ |
4 000 – 9 999 |
$40 – $100 |
30+ |
10 000 – 99 000 |
$80 – $150 |
40+ |
100 000 – 499 999 |
$130 – $300 |
50+ |
500 000 + |
$800 – $ 15 000 |
6. Sponsored content and partnerships
In good continuation from publishing guest posts, another way your website can make you rich is through sponsored posts. Note, guest posts are a different thing because they usually do not mention specific brands or products straight up.
Whereas sponsored posts are all about a specific brand or a product. Companies pay you to write about their products and services.
Alternatively, this can also be done through brand partnerships. By partnering up with brands for long-term collaborations, product placements, or endorsements you can even ensure a continuous income flow.
7. Offering online courses or webinars
The COVID-19 pandemic was a hugely profitable time to launch online courses! People had plenty of time to spare and were willing to spend it learning new skills and perspectives. And even though the world has opened up again, there is still a high demand for online courses and webinars.
If you have something that you can truly educate people on, an online course allows you to reach a global audience from your home. And creating one doesn’t even require that much time and effort! Marketing it, on the other hand, might.
There are also different kinds of platforms, like Teachable, that make creating online courses extra easy. A website can make you rich if you sell online courses and webinars on any topic under the Sun:
- sowing your own clothes
- coaching
- teaching cooking or how to fold laundry (not kidding)
- build a bookshelf from scratch, etc. etc. etc.
But please don’t go wasting people’s time and money with a course that actually doesn’t offer much value. There’s plenty of rubbish online already.
8. Selling your website
Last but not least, once you’ve managed to grow your website authority online to a decent extent your website can make you rich when you sell it.
This, of course, requires time and effort to grow a site that’s worth decent money. But then there’s another way to go about this: build websites for different niches and sell them.
You don’t necessarily need to optimize and grow it, just build one and sell it to someone who actually needs it. They can then do all the heavy lifting.
I still can’t believe this, but I have once received an offer to buy the Outlandish Blog. I can’t remember if there was talk about price (I guess not) but I shut it down immediately. This website is my Happiness Project, my biggest source of inspiration and a hobby that I built from scratch (and fought for!)
It may not be making me a millionaire any time soon, but then again Life tends to happen so nothing is impossible! All I know is we’ll never know unless we try ;)
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, making money with a website involves a combination of strategies that are tailored to your niche and audience. It’s not a quick process and it will involve many mistakes and failed trials. But every mistake and trial will teach you something, which allows you to become even better.
So, definitely experiment with different methods, it’s your website and you can keep it private while you build and test it. Once you publish the website, track your results and use the data to adapt your content approach based on what works best for you and your audience.
A website can make you rich in so many ways, but none of those ways can be achieved overnight. You know what they say, though: all good things to those who wait. And take action!
That website isn’t going to build itself so get on it today, choose a domain name and a hosting service and start playing around with different website themes!
